In 2008/2009 The Inkwell Awards began to auction one-off sketch covers to raise funds for the awards themselves. As usual Dave was keen to be involved and began to produce several Secret Invasion and Fallen Son covers. Dave was used to such covers, having done a number of Red Sonja covers for Dynamite and as such he was able to produce fully painted covers and sketch only covers.
The pinnacle of these covers, in a lot of collectors eyes, is the Secret Invasion cover showing long-time Marvel mascot, Forbush Man, exposed as a Skrull. Dave put a lot of time and effort into this cover and he expressed disappointment that it didn't raise as much as he'd have liked. He switched to sketches after that. I bought the cover and, ironically, I have resisted the lure to sell it many times over for far more than I paid.
Here's a Skrull! Skrulls are all the rage right now, with Marvel's Secret Invasion coming out.
Anyone ever notice that the Skrulls that initially appeared in FF #2 were a lot less impressive than later versions? This Skrull is more along those lines than the later versions that appeared. My theory is that the Skrull throneworld thot that Earth would be easy pickings and so sent loser Skrulls. This could have spun into a sort of Sgt. Frog direction, I suppose.
Might be fun to explore a comedy series with these guys, but I won't even bother to propose that to Marvel.
